U.S. LEAFLETS DROPPED OVER AFGHANISTAN 2001 - OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM

On Monday, 15th October, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said that U.S. planes were dropping leaflets as well as bombs over Afghanistan and the Dept. of Defense released for publication illustrations of the first two. Two languages have been used on each leaflet, Dari & Pashtu. Since then a further two leaflets have been released and it is anticipate that many more will follow once direct action is taken against Taliban troops.

THIS LEAFLET SHOWS THE DISTRIBUTION OF HUMANITARIAN DAILY RATIONS (HDR) FROM U.S. C-17 CARGO PLANES.

The yellow packages contain a complete day's food supply of 2,200 calories. A sample menu includes beans and rice in tomato sauce, fruit bars, vegetable crackers, fruit pastry, herb rice and even a non-alcoholic towelette, for washing afterwards. There is no meat in the packets which prevents any allegations regarding the provision of pork not properly prepared as specified in the Koran.The only text translates as 'HALAL' which refers to food prepared in accordance with the Koran.

There has been some controversy regarding the possibility of the Afghans mistaking HDR packs for unexploded cluster bombs lying on the ground. Both are the same colour (yellow) and approximately the same size. The 'bomblets' are similar in shape to a soft drinks/beer can and are filled with high explosive. Approximately 10% fail to explode on impact and could cause severe injury if picked up. To date cluster bombs and leaflets have not been used in the same area but in order to reduce the risk of mistaken identity it has been proposed that the colour of the HDR packs should be changed, possibly to blue.
